I've been a part of FutureLab since the beginning, and it has taught me how to be a better communicator and how to present myself better and how to build my knowledge. With all this hands-on experience, what it does is it allows a person to think on their own. It allows a person to become creative and create something on their own. I think this FutureLab program and also especially the Science Garage— having students being exposed to biotechnology—I think it's a tremendous opportunity for them to see what science looks like. When I first started, my Genentech mentors gave me some knowledge about how to look at things differently. I believe having mentors in life is vitally important, because they bring their experiences with them, and they show you who you can be. In the Science Garage—bringing some of the scientists from Genentech and work with our students, and they're able to see them as—oh, wow—maybe one day I can be just like them. Every day I think of the day as a fresh start. I think that I can just keep getting better, and there is never be a peak for me. I'd like to say thank you to Genentech for giving me this privilege of being a part of these programs—bringing the Science Garage to the school and providing me with a new way of thinking.
