learn more about Adult Secondary education

The unemployment rate among individuals with disabilities remains high. The Adult Transition Program (ATP) is designed to support young adults ages 18–22 with special needs as they transition into adulthood and, when possible, part-time or full-time employment.

ATP helps students become positive, productive, and contributing members of their communities by developing a continuum of skills tailored to each student’s unique abilities. The program focuses on preparing students for adult living through individualized instruction and real-world experiences.

Students build essential skills such as communication, mobility, independent living, and technology through both classroom instruction and community-based instruction (CBI). In addition, students are supported in developing positive behaviors, including respect for themselves and others, regular attendance, good citizenship, and an appreciation for diverse cultures.

The program serves individuals with a wide range of needs, including those with developmental disabilities. Students may also attend classes at Skyline College, with instruction taking place in integrated, age-appropriate, functional, and community-based settings.

ATP uses a supported employment model to place students in appropriate work, school, and community environments. Students are taught the skills needed to succeed in these settings while natural supports are identified and put in place to encourage long-term success.
