College and Career Resources

South San Francisco Adult Education’s College and Career program is designed to help adult learners plan for their next steps in education and the workforce. Through personalized guidance, students can explore college pathways, including community colleges, California State University and University of California systems, as well as vocational and career-focused programs. Our goal is to provide the tools, resources, and support every student needs to achieve their educational and professional goals.

California Community Colleges

California is home to 116 community colleges, including local options such as Skyline College, College of San Mateo, Cañada College, and City College of San Francisco.

Admission Requirements:

  • High school graduation or age 18.

Opportunities:

  • General education courses at lower cost than universities.

  • Two-year transfer programs to help students move on to CSU or UC schools after completing the first two years of a four-year program.

  • One- and two-year technical or vocational training programs in areas such as:

    • Cosmetology

    • Nursing

    • Business

    • Computer Science

    • Welding Technology

    • Auto Mechanics

    • Radio and Television

Community colleges offer flexible and affordable paths for students to meet their educational and career goals.

California State University (CSU) and University of California (UC) Systems

Admission to CSU and UC schools is generally based on:

  • Grade Point Average (GPA)

  • Standardized entrance exams (SAT or ACT) — currently suspended for UC applicants through spring 2025 due to COVID-19-related legal changes

Coursework Requirements:

  • Algebra and geometry

  • Four years of college preparatory English with a grade of C or better

The UC system may develop a new admissions test in the future that meets specified criteria.

Private Colleges and Universities

Admission requirements for private colleges and universities generally mirror those of CSU and UC schools.

  • Early planning with a school counselor is recommended to ensure all entrance requirements are met.

  • Private colleges may have additional requirements or recommendations depending on the institution.
